Why You Must Burn Belly Fat

Let’s be honest, when most of us try to burn belly fat it’s usually for the more vein of reasons – to look good in a new outfit or to rock up at some fancy event, all fly like.

And while it’s all very well to melt people’s faces off by how awesome you look, losing belly fat and gaining a flat stomach is about much, much more.

The bottom line is that belly fat isn’t just about appearance. It’s also directly linked with

diabetes, cancer

and

heart disease.

Gulp.

So let’s just agree right now that it’s in your own best interest (and that of anyone who cares about you) that you make a real commitment to

get rid of your belly fat for good.

Here’s how.

How To Burn Belly Fat: 8 Golden Rules

1. KIll the sugar

SUGAR - BAD FAT BURNING FOODS FOR A FLAT STOMACH

First things first. The ultimate golden rule is that

sugar is your biggest enemy

.

Did you know that eating sugary foods is far worse than eating fatty foods? Turns out that excess sugar gets stored as fat, making a flat stomach virtually impossible to achieve.

I personally have a major sweet tooth, so this has been a really tough one. But by cutting my sugar intake in half over the last 4 months I’ve seen

huge improvements.

My body has become much leaner and my body fat and belly fat have reduced a lot.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

I satisfy my craving for a sweet treat after each meal by having a couple of large medjool dates with a nice cuppa. They’re super sweet (but it’s natural sugar) and taste like nature’s toffees. Heaven.

I also have one cheat day every week. Mine’s on a Saturday, when you can catch me at my local farmers market scoffing down a cherry and chocolate biscuit cake. The rule here is everything in moderation. You’ll enjoy it more too.

2. Eat whole grains

WHOLE GRAINS -FAT BURNING FOODS FOR FLAT STOMACH

Steer clear of white refined grains (we’re talking white rice, white bread and regular white pasta) and replace these with their much healthier whole grain alternatives – wild brown rice, whole grain pasta and brown wheat bread for instance.

They’re much better for you and their higher fiber content will help you burn belly fat too.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Lots of brands use the term ‘wheat’ very loosely. Most of the time products that are labelled as ‘wheat’ actually have very little nutritional value. So look out for the real deal – “100 percent whole wheat” or “whole grain”… otherwise, move on.

3. Eat Fat (That’s right, I said it)

AVACADO - FAT BURNING FOODS FOR A FLAT STOMACH

Believe it or not,

it takes fat to burn fat

. But you have to eat good fats (think monosaturated). These can be found in:

  • avocados
  • nuts
  • seeds
  • soybeans
  • strong dark chocolate

Studies have shown fat burning foods like these (in moderation) can stop the build up of belly fat.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Learn the difference between good and bad fats. Safe to say, trans fats – like what’s in biscuits, cookies, cakes and margarine – will inflate that spare tire around your waist like there’s no tomorrow. Not so good for your belly fat burning aspirations.

4. Bump up the fiber in your diet

Soluble fiber keeps your insulin levels low, which speeds up your body’s fat burning ability. This makes fiber a super fat burning food.

Sources of fibre:

  • Beans. Baked, kidney, chilli, whatever – they’re all good.
  • Apples
  • Oats
  • Cherries
  • Porridge
  • Brown rice
  • Nuts. Almonds, walnuts and pecans are great

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Increase the fibre in your diet slowly. A gradual increase gives the natural bacteria in your digestive system some time to adapt to your new fiber intake.

5. Drink plenty of water

Boost your metabolism by starting your day with 2-3 large glasses of water, before you eat anything. Continue to guzzle throughout the day. As well as flushing out all the toxins and keeping you looking fresh, increasing your water intake will give you a more active metabolism – a sure fire way to get rid of belly fat.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

If you’re finding it hard to knock back glass after glass, introduce a few comforting cups of herbal tea. They count too.

6. Eat more protein

Let’s crunch the figures. Around 7% of calories in carbs are burned during digestion, whereas a whopping 30% of the calories in protein get burned as you eat them.

This makes high protein foods some of the best fat burning foods out there. They’ll keep you looking lean and mean and will make sure that tummy stays in check.

7. Eat a balanced breakfast

BREAKFAST - WATER - BEANS - FAT BURNING FOODS FOR FLAT STOMACH

This is one you gotta get right. No more skipping breakfast or grabbing something quick and nasty on the go. No more sugar filled refined cereals. OK? Cool.

By applying what we’ve already learned, we can see that a tasty bowl of porridge oats, sweetened with a little organic honey and some blueberries and raspberries will start your day off right with the ultimate combination of foods that burn belly fat.

8. Experiment with your carbs

Try to have 2 very low carb days, followed by one day of higher carb intake. Repeat this to create your new

carb cycle.

The logic here is that the days of low carbs will put your body into fat burning mode while the high carb day then gets your metabolism running again. This is thought to be a great

cycling system

to get rid of belly fat.

Also make sure you don’t eat carbs after 6pm if at all possible, or you run the risk of them turning to fat.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

In all cases, the word ‘carbs’ here refers to good complex carbs like brown rice, beans and oats.

The Top 6 Foods That Burn Belly Fat

1. Go Nuts

NUTS - FAT BURNING FOODS FOR FLAT STOMACH

Nuts keep you lean by making you feel full when you eat them. They also contain the good type of fat we mentioned earlier. This fat actually burns belly fat instead of packing it on (it’s called mono saturated, duh).

But be warned – don’t go too crazy on the nuts. Snack on around 15 walnuts or 20 almonds over the course of the day. This is enough to keep hunger at bay without clocking up the calories that other snacks contain.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Stay away from nuts that are mixed with dried fruit (too much sugar) and salted nuts too (too much sodium).

2. Green Vegetables

Leafy greens are your lovely friends. They’re also one of the very best fat burning foods out there. As well as having high nutritional value, eating leafy greens regularly is one of the best ways to lose belly fat for good.

Veggies like broccoli and spinach have great fibre content and very few calories.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Eat a fresh salad packed with leafy greens either before or with your meal and you won’t need as a big portion as usual. Spinach and romaine beat iceberg lettuce every time.

3. Berries

BERRIES - FAT BURNING FOODS FOR FLAT STOMACH

Berries contain a lot of fibre as well as a ton of other great nutrients and antioxidants. Fibre lowers insulin levels which burns up more body fat in the process, giving you that trim tum you’re after.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Stay away from jams and jellies that contain berries. Most are full of added sugar and have virtually no fibre. Not so good when trying to get rid of belly fat.

4. Porridge or Oatmeal

Porridge oats are one of the best fat burning foods around and will optimise your body for getting rid of unwanted belly fat when you eat them first thing in the morning.

They’re so much better than the other refined breakfast cereals. Most of these are packed full of hidden sugar.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

A big bowl of porridge might not sound like the most appetising of breakfast options, but it can be. Add berries, walnuts and cinnamon to make it super tasty. Breakfast of champs, I tells ya.

5. Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese

CHEESE - FAT BURNING FOODS FOR FLAT STOMACH

Say what?

That’s right, cheese is a fat burning food.

Well in this case, a little is.

Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese is calcium rich and protein packed. It’s pretty low in calories too and studies have found it can actually help to kick start your natural fat burning hormones. Treat yourself occasionally as a reward for your awesome progress towards losing belly fat.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Grate an ounce over your salad every other day and chow down.

6. Peanut Butter

Who’d of thunk it? But yes, peanut butter’s high niacin content helps keep your digestive system in order, placing it firmly among the best foods that burn belly fat.

But like I said in relation to nuts, don’t go crazy on the amount you consume. Anything containing nuts of any kind will have lots of fat – and peanut butter is no exception. Eat no more than two tablespoons per day.

Killer Flat Stomach Tip:

Buy organic peanut butter, or at a very minimum, a brand that contains no added sugar.

How To Burn Belly Fat As Consistently As Possible

Now that you know the best fat burning foods and the best ways to consume them, the secret to getting the best results is to do it in a way that’s sustainable.

The last thing you want is to lapse back into your old habits, so staying motivated and consistent is the most important thing. Here’s some suggestions to help keep on track over the long term.

Have a cheat day

This is a major motivator for me. It’s much easier for me to get through six days of doing things by the book, if there’s one day to look forward at the end when I can eat some of my favourite foods (in moderation).

Setting any food ‘off limits’ forever is like showing yourself a big red button that says ‘do not push’. There’s only going to be one outcome, I’m afraid.

So reward yourself once a week with a cheat day, where you celebrate your great progress by indulging (a little).

Phone a Friend

Everything’s easier in pairs. See if you can find a friend that’s willing to share your goals with you. You can hold each other accountable and keep each other motivated and on track.

Even if your partner, spouse or friends aren’t on the same mission for a flat stomach, share your goal with them anyway. They’ll support you in other ways and help to keep you on the right path.

Keep a food journal

JOURNAL - FAT BURNING FOODS FOR FLAT STOMACH

If you read this blog regularly, you’ll know that I’m a big believer in writing shit down.

Whether it’s your personal goals or your to do list, writing it down will dramatically increase the likelihood you’ll achieve it.

And getting rid of belly fat is no different. Those who keep a food journal are more successful at reaching their ideal body shape.

So why wouldn’t you? You’ll easily spot bad habits and be forced to take responsibility when you slip up. Get journaling!

Conclusion: The Absolute Best Way To Lose Belly Fat

Almost there.

The golden rules for getting rid of belly fat?

Check.

The best fat burning foods?

Check.

But let’s ask the big question.

What’s the absolute best way to lose belly fat and get the real results you want?

Well, the answer is to combine all the tips above with one more thing.

Exercise.

Any type of exercise you can think of will work. But you have to do it

regularly

.

Cycle, run, walk the dog, do yoga, whatever. Just do it 3-5 times a week to the point where you a) break a sweat and b) need a shower. These are the signs that you actually did

real exercise

.

And to take things a step further, here are two tips on how to exercise in a way that’ll burn off belly fat the quickest.

Lift weights and do cardio

Cardio will burn more calories than lifting weights, so if you can only do one of these, stick with that. But for maximum flat stomach awesomeness it’s the combination of both that’ll give you the best results.

Remember, this doesn’t have to be complicated or super demanding. Lifting weights doesn’t mean you have to join a gym.

For example, my own exercise routine involves running 3-4 days per week and lifting some weights 2 days per week. For my weight session, all I have is a 12kg kettle bell and pair of dumb bells. I put on some tunes and workout for about 40 mins in my house. Easy peasy.

Give something similar a shot and you’ll see great results with the quickness.

A don’t be afraid to get creative. If walking or running is your thing and you don’t fancy a dedicated weight session like mine, just buy some arm or leg weights and wear them while you walk twice per week.

Come on, there’s no excuse.

Go for HIIT

HIIT - FAT BURNING FOODS FOR FLAT STOMACH

This is one I’ve been doing for about 3 months now and it’s fantastic.

This is one I’ve been doing for about 3 months now and it’s fantastic.

High-intensity interval training has been proven to burn more fat in less time that other exercises. The great thing about HIIT is that it doesn’t mean you have to do extra long exercise sessions – you just have to do them with a bit more intensity.

For example, I used to go on a 40 minute run where I’d keep a pretty good, consistent pace. But since switching into high intensity mode, I now get much better fat burning results, but still just running for 40 minutes.

The difference is, I now do high intensity sprints followed by a lower intensity recovery pace. This is entirely different to my old way of running where I’d hold the same pace for the whole 40 minutes. T

he sprints are short (around 2 minutes) and are as fast as I can possibly run. The recovery pace is pretty slow (usually for about 3 minutes). Then I repeat. The result is much more fat burned within the same 40 minutes than before.

The science here is that HIIT bumps up your metabolism and keeps it up afterwards, creating an ‘after burn’ effect.

Give it a shot.

Take Photos

This might sound strange and a little creepy. But you need to take photos of yourself in the nip every week.

Ok, maybe not fully naked but naked enough so you can see your belly (or whatever area you want to tone up). I started this recently and once you get over the initial awkwardness of standing half nekkid in front of the mirror taking a selfie, you can use it as one of the biggest motivators at your disposal.

With a picture, there’s nowhere to hide. Excuses go out the window in the harsh light of day. Staring at a picture of yourself will keep you motivated and on track to get to where you want to be.

Also, tracking your progress with pictures is the best way to see results (forget weighing scales) and when you can visibly tell that you’re on the right path by looking at a photo, you’ll feel awesome and inspired to continue.

This is a top tip. Take your first picture right now (don’t pout though).
